WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SWEPT BY WESTFIELD STATE, 3-0
CHICOPEE, MA, Oct. 12, 2006 - Elms College freshman middle hitter Melissa Clark (Chicopee, MA) registered a team-high six kills, but Westfield State sophomore outside hitter Ashley Conway (Dracut, MA) knocked down a match-high 11 kills to help the visiting Owls earn a 3-0 (30-12, 30-17, 30-28) win over the Blazers in Thursday night's non-conference women's volleyball match at the Maguire Center.
With the win, Westfield State snapped a four-match losing streak and improved to 11-12 overall. Elms College lost its fourth straight match to fall to 5-11 overall.
Elms College trailed just 12-9 in game one before Westfield State used an 18-3 run to close out the first game.
Westfield State again used a big run, as the Owls pulled away from a slim 11-10 early lead with a 19-7 run to seal the second game.
The Owls then secured the match by scoring 10 of game three's final 15 points to overcome a 23-20 deficit.
Junior outside hitter Morgan Hosking (North Reading, MA) had eight kills, while sophomore setter Ashley Bergeron (Coventry, CT) and junior setter Elissa Genereux (Belchertown, MA) combined for 43 assists for Westfield State in the victory.
Freshman setter Kimberly Phillips (Randolph, MA) handed out 11 assists for the Blazers in the losing effort.
Elms College returns to non-conference play when it
travels to Daniel Webster College on Wednesday, October 18. Match
time is 7:00 p.m.
