About The Team
Established in 1981, the women's basketball program is Elms
College's oldest NCAA-sponsored athletic team. It has recorded more
than 200 victories during its 27-year history, won the 1992-1993
Massachusetts Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women
(MAIAW) Championship, the 2000-2001 North Atlantic Conference (NAC)
Championship, and has had six players eclipse the 1,000-point
milestone.
The 2008-2009 women's basketball season ranked among the best, as the Blazers posted 15 victories - the second-highest total in the program's 29-year history. The Blazers finished third in the New England Collegiate Conference's (NECC) inaugural season posting a 12-4 conference record and advancing to the conference tournament semifinals. The team won 14 of its final 19 games, as it fell just one win shy of the all-time record of 16 set in 1990-1991.
The Blazers also made their mark nationally in the NCAA Division III as the team finished second in the country in defensive field goal percentage and 13th in rebound margin.
Junior forward Amanda Brogna (Oxford, MA) was named First Team All-NECC, as she finished the regular season fourth in the conference in scoring (17.4 ppg) and second in rebounding (11.3 rpg). Brogna, who registered a collegiate career-best 15 double-doubles this season, earned NECC Player of the Week honors four times, and was once named ECAC Division III New England Player of the Week.
Senior forward Paige Schneider (Windsor, CT), a
four-year player, was named Second Team All-NECC, as she averaged
9.1 points and 7.5 rebounds during the regular season. Schneider
became the fourth player in the program's history to haul in 20 or
more boards in a game. She finished her career as the team's 12th
all-time leading scorer with 744 points, and hauled in 589 rebounds
- the third-highest total in 10 years.
Freshman point guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, MA) was named Honorable Mention All-NECC. Talmadge, who was named NECC Rookie of the Week three times, averaged 9.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 27 starts at the point guard position.
In addition to competing in the NECC, the Blazers are also members of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
