About The Team
The women's basketball program, established in 1981 as Elms
College's oldest NCAA-sponsored athletic team, has recorded more
than 200 victories during its 26-year history, and has had five
players eclipse the 1,000-point milestone.
In 2005-06, the Blazers placed fourth overall in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) West Division, and earned their third conference postseason berth in four years under head coach Laura Habacker.
Last season, the team earned runner-up honors in the season-opening Blazers Invitational, and in its next game, defeated Smith College (Northampton) 42-40 to post the program's first win over the Pioneers in 24 years.
Guard Jenn Payton (Stratford, CT) averaged a team-leading 11.3 points in her first season with the Blazers, point guard Michelle Fernandes (Danbury, CT) ranked among the top 15 in the NAC with a team-leading 66 assists, and forward Paige Schneider (Windsor, CT) was named to the WPI Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The 2004-05 season was also one of continued improvement for the women's basketball program. The Blazers recorded their most victories since 2001-02, advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAC tournament, and finished among the top six in the conference in both scoring offense and defense.
The program, which has competed in numerous tournaments, won both
the 1992-93 Massachusetts Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
for Women (MAIAW) Championship, and the 2000-01 NAC Championship.
In addition to belonging to the 13-team NAC, the Blazers are members of both the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).
