About The Team

The field hockey program at Elms College, which competes at the highest level in New England, was the first intercollegiate team established by the college's athletic department in 1981.

The Blazers were especially dominant from 1986 to 1991, when they recorded a winning percentage of better than .670, including a 15-4-1 record in 1989. That same year, the program claimed the school's first-ever state championship by winning the MAIAW (Massachusetts Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) title.

Since then, the Blazers have continued to compete in several postseason championships in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).

Elms College players have routinely been named to all-conference and all-academic teams throughout the years. In 2003, the Blazers were awarded the NAC Team Sportsmanship Award.

In 2006, midfielder Catherine Thresher (West Suffield, CT) was named Honorable Mention All-NAC, while Colleen Strunk (Stoneham, MA) became just the sixth goalkeeper in program-history to register 400 career saves. She finished her four-year career as the team's fourth all-time leader with 421 saves.

Head coach Katie Grabiec maintains the program's strength with an emphasis on recruiting and an upgraded schedule that included the program's first-ever trip to compete at the Betty Richey Tournament at Vassar College last season.

The Blazers also compete annually against local rivals Smith College and Mount Holyoke College.
