About The Team
Since its first season in 1986, our softball teams have won more
than 300 games, made nine Massachusetts Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW) tournament appearances,
won the 1994 MAIAW Tournament championship, claimed four conference
tournament championships, and in 2003, became the first team in any
sport in Elms College Athletic Department history to earn a bid to
the NCAA Division III championship. The program and individual
players have also been recognized nationally as statistical leaders
in team batting average and scoring.
The Blazers have been especially dominant since 2002, as they have earned three berths in the NCAA Division III Championship (2003, 2006, and 2007), claimed five regular season conference titles, and have won 17 or more games in eight consecutive seasons.
In 2009, the Blazers began play in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and finished the regular season with a 14-2 conference record. During the regular season, the Blazers were second in the conference in team batting average (.352), team ERA (1.16) and fielding percentage (.963).
Six players earned All-NECC honors. Freshman pitcher
Courtney Hampton (Westfield, MA), the NECC's
Rookie of the Year, went a perfect 7-0 in the NECC with a sparkling
1.14 ERA. Hampton recorded eight overall wins in the regular season
and led the Blazers' pitching staff with 75 strikeouts in 74.0
innings. In the team's final game of the regular season against
Southern Vermont, she threw her first career perfect game. Freshman
third baseman Kelly Callahan (Monson, MA), an
Honorable Mention All-NECC selection, finished the regular season
fifth in the NECC with a .473 in-conference batting average.
In addition to Callahan, five other players batted better than .300, including Honorable Mention All-NECC selections, junior catcher Kim Lastowski (Turners Falls, MA) (.360), and senior short stop Kerrie Bowden (Chicopee, MA) (.322); sophomore designated player and First Team All-NECC selection Destinee Meeker (Bantam, CT) (.339); sophomore center fielder Alison McBride (East Providence, RI) (.333); and Hampton (.318).
Meeker posted a team-leading three home runs and 25 RBI, while McBride was a perfect 9 for 9 in stolen base attempts. Bowden, who helped lead the Blazers to back-to-back NCAA Division III Championship berths in 2006 and 2007, finished her four-year career as the program's all-time leader in doubles.
At the beginning of each season, the Blazers travel south to compete against many of the nation's top Division III programs in the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.
The newly built Cheryl R. Condon softball complex serves as the Blazers' home field. The field has a batting tunnel and dugouts, and has played host the last two years to the high school's West Softball Sectional Tournament semifinals.
In addition to competing in the NECC, the Blazers belong to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
