About The Team
Now in its fourth intercollegiate season, the baseball program
finished the regular 2007 season at a program-record fourth place
in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) standings. The Blazers
posted their first-ever win over St. Joseph's College (Standish,
Maine), which was ranked among the top 10 in the New England
Intercollegiate Baseball Association Poll (NEIBA), and earned their
first-ever conference sweep over Thomas College (Waterville, Maine)
in the final weekend of the regular season.
The Blazers' success did not go unnoticed, as the conference's head coaches named four Elms players All-NAC, including First Team selections Nate Hawes (New Hope, MN), third baseman, and pitcher Sean Bergeron (Chicopee, MA).
Hawes finished the season with a .306 batting average, blasted four home runs, and tallied a team-high 26 RBI to earn all-conference honors for the third straight year. Bergeron registered three wins, struck out a team-high 24 batters, and limited opponents to just a .183 batting average in six appearances.
Catcher Joe Sawa (Chicopee, MA) and first baseman
Scott Netkovick (South Hadley, MA) each garnered
Second Team All-NAC honors.
Sawa recorded a .333 batting average and 23 hits, including five doubles and 11 RBI, while Netkovick led the team with a .378 batting average.
Every year during spring break, the Blazers play eight or more games at the Port Charlotte Invitational in Florida, and have competed against some of the nation's top Division III programs there in each of the past three years.
The team's highly competitive schedule has also featured games against New England Division III powers Western New England College (Springfield) and Williams College (Williamstown, Massachusetts), as well as local opponents Springfield College, Westfield State College, and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) in North Adams.
MacKenzie Stadium, located in nearby Holyoke, Massachusetts, serves as the Blazers' home field. MacKenzie once served as the home field for the Holyoke Millers professional minor league baseball club, and is one of only two stadium-style baseball facilities located in western Massachusetts. The stadium is fully lighted, providing opportunities for night games.
