Bill Tyler enters his 14th season as head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming programs. He brings more than 40 years of coaching and competitive swimming experience to the Blazers’ programs.

Since joining the Elms College staff in 2004, Coach Tyler has become a four-time Great Northeast Conference (GNAC) Coach of the Year and was also named the 2006-2007 New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Coach of the Year. Since his arrival, all but one of the Blazers’ current records have been set under his guidance.

In 2012-13, Coach Tyler guided the Blazers' men's team to a 7-2 dual meet record and a sixth place finish at the season-ending NEISDA Championship. Under his direction, Elms also saw a freshman swimmer qualify and attend the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship who was the first Blazers' swimmer to do attend the event.

During the 2011-12 season, Coach Tyler directed the men’s squad to a total of 26 new school records, had one swimmer named to the GNAC All-Invitational team and one swimmer named All-New England.

Prior to joining Elms College, Coach Tyler worked as an assistant coach with the UMass-Amherst women’s swim team, and from 2001-2003, he served as head coach of both the boy’s and girl’s swimming programs at Amherst (Mass.) Regional High School. During that time, he coached three high school All-Americans, one Massachusetts State Swimmer of the Year (2002-2003), and led the Hurricanes boys’ team to a pair of top three finishes at the Western Massachusetts Championship. He also spent several years as an age group master’s coach.

As a competitive swimmer at Amherst Regional, Coach Tyler won Western Massachusetts individual titles in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, and was a part of a relay team that won the state and New England championships. As a high school senior, he was named the Western Massachusetts Most Valuable Swimmer, and was the New England champion in the 100-yard freestyle (clocked in New England record time) and the 200-yard medley relay. In recognition of his accomplishments, Coach Tyler was inducted into the inaugural Amherst Regional High School Hall of Fame in September, 2010.

During the summer of 2009, Coach Tyler won the 100-meter freestyle at the Bay State Games in the Master 3 division to become nationally ranked.

Coach Tyler is a faculty member in the Elms College Physical Education Department. He earned his bachelor’s degree in fisheries biology and his master’s of education from UMass-Amherst.
