  • A Swimmer’s Reflection on Her Four-Year Career

    For the last four seasons, the Elms College women’s swim team has reached the pinnacle of success. In 2010-11 and 2011-12, the Blazers have finished second in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship. The team has set numerous school and pool records and has also qualified many swimmers for the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championship – a three-day event that concludes each season.     he Elms College men’s 200-meter medley and 800-meter freestyle relay squads both set a new school and pool record, while senior Emalee Furtek (Ludlow, Mass.)and junior Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) each clocked individual school records during Saturday afternoon’s swim meet against the University of New England at Partyka Natatorium.

    Elms College junior Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) clocked a pair of school records for the women’s team and won two events, while freshman James Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) notched a pair of victories on the men’s side as the Blazers earned a split with Norwich University in Saturday afternoon’s swim meet at Partyka Natatorium.

    Elms College freshman Stephen Lynch (Madison, Conn.) set a new school record in the 200-yard backstroke, while senior Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) and junior Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) each won three individual events as the Blazers swam to a split against Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) on Saturday afternoon in Newburgh, N.Y.

    The Elms College men’s and women’s swim teams had a total of five swimmers earn three first place finishes as the Blazers earned a split with Bridgewater State University during Wednesday afternoon’s swim meet that saw both teams honor the victims of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn.

    When Bridgewater State and Elms College hit the pool on January 9th, both teams will be wearing the same cap. The decision was made in part because both campuses have been hit hard by the December 14th tragedy.

    Elms College freshman Ethan Etheridge (Pawtucket, R.I.) set a new Blazers school and pool record in the 50-meter breaststroke and the men’s 200-meter medley relay team set a new school in pool record to help pace Elms to a split in Saturday afternoon’s swim meet against Colby-Sawyer College at Partyka Natatorium.

    Elms College junior Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) won three events, but Smith College was able to secure a 133-101 victory over the Blazers in Tuesday evening’s women’s swim meet at Partyka Natatorium.

    The Elms College men’s team used a win in the final event – the 200-yard freestyle relay – to complete a 126-118 victory over St. Joseph’s College (Maine), and the women’s team suffered a 110-101 loss to the Monks during Saturday’s swim meet in Standish, Maine.
  • Bird, Girard and Starke to Appear on ESPN Radio-Springfield's College Weekly

    Members of the Elms College swim team including seniors Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.) and Jonathan Girard (West Springfield, Mass.), junior Aaron Starke (Chicopee, Mass.), will appear on ESPN Radio Springfied's College Weekly on Friday afternoon. The weekly show runs from 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. on AM station 1450 every Friday and this week, the Blazers will be the featured in-studio guests.
