Baseball Sweeps NECC Weekly Honors
ORTIZ, WOOD, IAVICOLI SWEEP WEEKLY NECC BASEBALL HONORS
ATTLEBORO, MA, March 16, 2009 - Elms College baseball sophomore shortstop Jonathan Ortiz (Carolina, Puerto Rico), sophomore pitcher Matt Wood (Feeding Hills, MA) and freshman third baseman Nicolino Iavicoli (Longmeadow, MA) earned the New England Collegiate Conference's (NECC) first-ever weekly honors on Monday, March 16.
Ortiz was named NECC Player of the Week, as he batted .500 (16 for 32) with two home runs and 15 RBI in nine games. In the Blazers' 11-4 over SUNY-Cobleskill, Ortiz went a combined 4 for 8 and tied a program-record with two home runs.
Wood was named NECC Pitcher of the Week, as he posted a solid 1.32 ERA, and scattered just two earned runs on five hits over 13.2 innings of work that also included 14 strikeouts.
Iavicoli completed the Blazers' weekly award sweep, as he earned NECC Rookie of the Week honors. In eight games, he batted .409 (9 for 22) with three RBI and also went a perfect 7 for 7 in stolen base attempts.
