BASEBALL HELD OFF BY WESTFIELD STATE, 8-5

WESTFIELD, MA, March 25, 2008 - Elms College senior center fielder Joe Ferry (Palmer, MA) and junior right fielder Nick Mackowiak (Dudley, MA) each delivered RBI singles, but Westfield State raced out to an early five-run lead then held on for an 8-5 win over the Blazers in Tuesday's non-conference baseball game at Alumni Field.

Westfield State evened its record at 5-5, while Elms College fell to 3-9.

The host Owls sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning in scoring five runs, including a hit batsman with the bases loaded, on five hits.

Elms College scored a run in the third and four runs in the fifth to tie the score at 5-5. The third-inning run was unearned as were three of the fourth-inning runs.

Elms College finished with five hits during the nine-inning game - four of which came in the fourth-inning uprising that included the RBI hits by Ferry and Mackowiak.

Westfield State broke the 5-5 tie with two runs in the home half of the fifth. Junior catcher Adam Franke (Monson, MA) laced a two-out RBI double down the left field line. Sophomore outfielder Mike Trachtenberg (Newton, MA), who had reached safely on a two-out bunt, scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-5.

The Owls scored their final run in the seventh on a hit and two errors.

Westfield State designated hitter Kevin Lyons (Braintree, MA) was 2 for 4 with a double and a RBI. Trachtenberg was 2 for 4 with two runs scored Franke was 2 for 3 with a RBI double.

Freshman center fielder Rob Reyome (Westfield, MA) doubled for one of the Blazers' five hits.

Westfield sophomore Jeff Fields (Pittsfield, MA) pitched the final two innings to notch the save.
