BASEBALL FALLS AT WESLEYAN, 8-3

Box score

MIDDLETOWN, CT, April 9, 2008 - Elms College freshman pitcher Matt Wood (Feeding Hills, MA) threw six-plus innings of excellent relief, but Wesleyan University erupted for six runs over the first two innings and went on to an 8-3 win over the Blazers in Wednesday's non-conference baseball game at Andrus Field.

With the win, Wesleyan improved to 10-12 overall. Elms College fell to 5-11.

The Cardinals, who had 13 hits on the day, plated three runs in each of the first two innings to build a quick 6-0 lead.

Wood entered the game with two outs in the second and was sensational from there, as he struck out seven and allowed no earned runs on just four hits in 6.1 innings of work.

Junior left fielder Joe Esile (Milford, CT) and sophomore right fielder Justin Jacobs (Springhill, FL) belted back-to-back RBI doubles for the Blazers in their three-run, seventh.

Jacobs and sophomore third baseman Brian Marrero (Kendall Park, NJ) each went 2 for 4 in the loss.

Elms College is slated to return to non-conference play on Friday, April 11 at MIT. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
