PRIOR TO THE GAME
The Women's Soccer team would honor their three seniors; forward Jordan Lee (Hampden, Mass.), forward Jamie McDonough (Dedham, Mass.), and midfielder Daniella Niemiec (Chicopee, Mass.), along the five seniors from Mitchell.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Elms would begin the conference matchup putting offensive pressure early, with shots from junior forward Kaylee Little (Boston, Mass.) and Lee in the opening six minutes. Then at the eighth minute of play, Lee would connect a pass to McDonough for the first goal of the game. The Blazers would continue to have a strong offensive front against Mitchell after a combined four shots by Lee, junior defender Sydney Polica (Stratford, Conn.), junior forward/midfielder Emily Basua (Oxnard, Calif.), and Niemiec. The Mariners would then take their first shot of the game, but junior goalkeeper Ramia Santos (Ephrata, Penn.) would make the save. Even after a spurt of offensive play from their opposition, Elms would continue to control the game with a combined shot by McDonough, Basua, Little, first year midfielder Zellia Fanfa (Brunswick, N.Y.), and first year midfielder/defender Eva Intrieri (Westerly, R.I.). Then in the 41st minute, the Blazers would draw a foul in front of the net to draw a penalty shot attempt, where sophomore midfielder/defender Jenna McGuire (Shelton, Conn.) would find the back of the net to increase their lead to 2-0. As the clock began to wind down towards the halftime break, junior midfielder Lilli Ramos (Springfield, Mass.) would take a shot and Santos would make a save, as Elms would hold on to their 2-0 lead in the halftime break.
The second half would begin with the Blazers continuing to put pressure on the Mariners defense, by taking a combined eight shots by McDonough, Little, Bausa, and first year forward Maddie Saunders (North Adams, Mass.), but the second shot of the half would see Polica scoring after receiving a pass from little to extend their lead to 3-0. Shortly thereafter, Elms would have to play a player down after a second yellow card was given to a player. But this would not deter the Blazers from letting this game slip away, as McDonough and Little would both take shots moments later, then Basua would find the back of the net to bring the score to 4-0. As the half continued, first year midfielder Claire Lewia (Meriden, Conn.), Saunders, Intrieri, first year defender Melanie Pugo (Clinton, Conn.), Fanfa, and first year midfielder Giuliana Fortunato (Auburn, Mass.) would take a combined ten shots, with two shots on net and two shots hitting the crossbar. Then with just under ten-minutes to play, a player from Mitchell would earn a second yellow card and they would have to play with ten players as well. But as the final moments drew near, Elms would see Lewia and junior defender McKenna Moore (Hartford, Conn.) take four more shots and would clinch the conference victory at home 4-0.
