Strong Second Half Pushes Blazers Past Falcons

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Elms College Women's Soccer team hosted Fitchburg State University in a non-conference game at Leary Field on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Once again, the Blazers found themselves down 1-0 early into the game. However, the Falcons goal did not stop Elms from being aggressive on the offensive end, as junior forward/midfielder Emily Basua (Oxnard, Calif.) and forward/midfielder Caitlin Willard (Northampton, Mass.) both put shots on net late in the first half with an attempt to get Elms back in the game. Even though the Fitchburg State goalkeeper saved a flurry of Elms shots and preserved the Falcons 1-0 lead, the Blazers went into halftime confident in their ability to tie and possibly win the game.

Elms continued to come up short on the offensive end, but as the second half wound down, the Blazers finally broke through. Midfielder/defender Jenna McGuire (Shelton, Conn.) dribbled through the Falcons defense and made a key assist to senior forward Jordan Lee (Hampden, Mass.), who scored to tie the game at 1-1. Shortly after, senior forward Jamie McDonough (Dedham, Mass.) would score her second goal of the season to give Elms the 2-1 lead. The Blazers buckled down on defense after McDonough's goal, as they did not allow the Falcons to even put a shot on net. Elms' late defense held up, and the Blazers prevailed 2-1 against the Falcons to record their second win of the season via a comeback victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• McDonough and Lee would each score a goal for Elms.

• White would make seven saves in the game.

• Baidy, Busua, Ramos, and Willard would all take shots during the game.

UP NEXT: The Elms Women's Soccer team will host Norwich University for their conference opener on Saturday, September 6th at 12 pm at Leary Field.
