Field Hockey Goes to Overtime on Senior Night

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Elms College Field Hockey team hosted Gordon College for their annual Senior Night and a non-conference game on Wednesday evening at Leary Field.

PRIOR TO THE GAME

The Elms College Field Hockey team honored their six seniors; goaltender Kaitlyn Lynes (South Hadley, Mass.), midfielder Abbie Sierzego (South Hadley, Mass.), defender Elizabeth Franzoni (Rutland, Vt.), defender Julianna Morrissette (Killingly, Conn.), defender Katherine Ingram (Chicopee, Mass.), forward Alexis Barna (Agawam, Mass.), and their loved ones, along with the seniors from Gordon, prior to the start of the non-conference matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams would remain in a struggle early, with neither team able to take advantage of the other in their respective defensive halves. Elms made some headway on the offensive end when first year forward Jordyn Rossi (West Springfield, Mass.) recorded an early shot that was saved. However, the Blazers remained strong on defense, and Lynes played well in net, saving a Gordon shot to keep the game knotted at 0. Both teams jostled for field position throughout the first half, but with both teams remaining strong defensively, Elms went into halftime tied 0-0 with the Fighting Scots.

Lynes played stellar in net during the third period, saving a handful of Gordon shots to keep the game tied. The Blazers was unable to make any moves on offense, but remained strong when controlling the middle of the field. The Fighting Scots would continue to press offensively, and scored late in the fourth quarter to go up 1-0. Up against the wall, Elms decided to get ultra aggressive on the offensive end. Sierzego recorded a shot that was saved, but led to a late goal for Rossi, assisted by Morrisette, that pushed the game into overtime. In overtime, the two conference foes would battle for possession, the Blazers recorded a crucial penalty after a breakaway by the Fighting Scots that would result in a Gordon penalty shot goal, handing Elms a heartbreaking 2-1 loss on Senior Night.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Rossi would score a goal, with two shots during the game.

  • Lynes would make a save after seeing three shots.

  • Morrissette would add an assist.

  • Sierzego and Sheridan would each record a shot during the game.

 

UP NEXT: The Elms College Field Hockey team will travel to Nashua, N.H. against Rivier University on Saturday, October 25th for a conference game at 12 pm.
