Men's Basketball Lose to Dean in Non-Conference Play
FRANKLIN, Mass. - The Elms College Men's Basketball team traveled to Dean College for a non-conference game on Wednesday evening.
BASICS
Score: Elms College 55 | Dean College 71
Records: Blazers 6-7, 0-0 (GNAC) | Bulldogs 10-3, 0-0 (GNAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The non-conference game would start with Dean scoring on back-to-back possessions to take an early 4-0 lead. Then, junior guard Andrew Ciaglo (Hadley, Mass.) would connect a pass to senior forward/guard RJ Mayfield (Springfield, Mass.) for a layup. The two conference foes would answer quickly with Mayfield making a jump shot, but the Bulldogs would extend their lead by four more points. The two teams would trade possession until Mayfield would block a layup and make a second jump shot. After another layup by Dean, the Blazers would cut their opposition's lead to a single point when Ciaglo would make a three-point shot, after receiving a pass from senior forward Adam Sarlan (Chicopee, Mass.). Elms would then turn the tides, following a steal by sophomore forward/guard Daniel Villanueva (Seymour, Conn.) would lead to a Mayfield layup to give the Blazers their first lead, 11-10. The Elms offense would continue their efforts, with assistance from a jump shots by Ciaglo and sophomore guard Jack Lo (Harahan, La.) and a layup from junior guard Travis Jordan (Springfield, Mass.), along with a combined five free throws from Lo and Mayfield and a block by Mayfield, but the Bulldogs would regain the lead. As the clock neared the halftime break, the intrastate foes would continue to battle for the lead, with Villanueva would record a block and a layup, Ciaglo adding a pair of three-point shots and a free throw, senior center/guard/forward Edgardo Jacob Cancel (Northampton, Mass.) making a jump shot, but Dean would maintain the lead, 37-33.
The second half would see both teams score in their first possessions, with the Blazers scoring on a layup from Mayfield. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs would add five points to their lead before Elms added a basket, when first year forward Jaedon Bogar (Aubrey, Texas) would make a jump shot. As the half would continue forward, Dean would continue to add to their lead, but the Blazers would not retreat. Cancel would record two layups, Mayfield added a block and a layup, Lo would make a pair of three-point shots and a steal, a three-point shot by first year guard Jamie Lawson (Charlotte, N.C.), and a three-point play from Sarlan, along with a steal by Villanueva. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs would walk away with the non-conference victory, 71-55.
