Women’s Soccer Downs Wheelock College, 7-0
CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College senior forward Jennifer Killion (Cambridge, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Gianna Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) each netted two goals to help lift the Blazers to a 7-0 victory over Wheelock College in Wednesday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's soccer game at Leary Field.
With the win, Elms improves to 8-5-3 overall, 5-1-2 in NECC action, while Wheelock slides to 1-12 on the season, 1-7 in league play.
Gorneault put the Blazers ahead early, netting her first goal in the third minute off an indirect kick from sophomore defender Ashley Venancio (Ludlow, Mass.). She struck for her second goal at the 25:46 mark when she headed the ball into the net on a pass from senior forward Erica Griffo (Syracuse, N.Y.).
Three minutes later, sophomore midfielder Chelsea Carroll (Meriden, Conn.) delivered a pass to Killion who sent her first goal of the contest into the back of the net to give Elms a 3-0 advantage.
Sophomore forward Victoria Cebula (Granby, Mass.) recorded the Blazers' fourth goal of the stanza in the 37th minute of action.
Five minutes into the second half, Elms' freshman midfielder Sevonnah LaRochelle (Chicopee, Mass.) lifted the ball over the defense and into the net on a direct free kick, lifting the Blazers' cushion to 5-0.
Ten minutes later, Griffo received a feed from sophomore midfielder Christina Goodchild (East Longmeadow, Mass.) creating a one-on-one opportunity. Griffo took advantage and blasted the ball into the nylon giving the Blazers' a 6-0 lead.
Carroll found Killion for a second time to cap the scoring at 7-0 in the 70th minute of play.
Killion has amassed 40 goals during her career and is just four shy of tying the program's all-time record of 44 held by Krystyna Gagne '10. Killion is currently tied with Lisa DeVergiolio.
Wheelock net-minder Alexandra Chiesa (Medord, Mass.) tallied 19 saves on the day.
Elms' senior goalkeeper Kelly Callahan (Monson, Mass.) tended the net for the first 45 minutes of play before being spelled by sophomore Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.) to start the second period.
Freshman Ashley LaFountain (Springfield, Mass.) played the final 14:45 between the pipes and collected the lone save as Elms outshot the Wildcats 45-1 in the contest.
The Blazers' return to action on Saturday Oct. 29 when they host NECC foe Daniel Webster College. Game is slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
