Box Score

NEWTON, Mass. – Elms College sophomore goalkeeper Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.) stopped six shots and the Blazers scored three first half goals to pull away to a 3-0 victory over Mount Ida College in Monday afternoon's non-conference women's soccer game at Mount Ida Athletic Stadium.

With the win, Elms earns its first win of the season to improve to 1-2-1 overall, while Mount Ida slips to 1-5 on the season.

Elms scored three times in the first half, sparked by an own goal by Mount Ida when a corner kick by sophomore defender Allyson Witaszek (Feeding Hills, Mass.) deflected off a Mustang and into the net giving the Blazers a 1-0 lead 11 minutes into the game.

Elms struck again in the 17th minute when sophomore midfield Gianna Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) crossed the ball from the 18-yard box to senior forward Jennifer Killion (Cambridge, Mass.) who played the ball into the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season which put the Blazers ahead, 2-0.

Killion then found senior midfielder Amanda Alvarado (Springfield, Mass.) who shot into an open goal to lift Elms' advantage to 3-0 with 22 minutes remaining in the opening stanza.

Killion finished with four shots on goal, while Zisk turned away three shots in each period to earn her first victory between the pipes this season.

Mount Ida goalkeeper Tracy Koukol (North Attleboro, Mass.) made five saves in the losing effort while Sierra Legge (Schodack Landing, N.Y.) fired three shots on target.

The second frame saw a defensive struggle as neither side registered a goal. Elms, which outshot Mount Ida 22-11 for the game, totaled 11 shots in each half, while the Mustangs managed six in the first half and five in the second.

Elms returns to non-conference action on Wednesday, Sept. 21 when it hosts Smith College in its 2011 home-opener at Leary Field at 7:00 p.m.
