CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College freshman midfielder Sevonnah LaRochelle (Chicopee, Mass.) netted her first collegiate goal early in the first half to help lift the Blazers to a 3-0 victory over Western New England University in Tuesday evening's non-conference women's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the win Elms improves to 3-2-2 overall and earns its first victory over Western New England since the 1993 season. The Golden Bears fall to 1-8-1 on the season.

Elms jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when LaRochelle found the back of the net in the 10th minute of play for her first collegiate goal.

Fourteen minutes later, Elms' sophomore midfielder Christina Goodchild (East Longmeadow, Mass.) sent a ball from midfield to sophomore midfielder Gianna Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) who played the ball into the net giving the Blazers' a 2-0 advantage at the 22:42 mark.

Elms held a 2-0 cushion 30 minutes into the second half until senior forward Jennifer Killion (Canbridge, Mass.) took her own penalty shot ricochet off the left post past Western New England's diving goalkeeper Victoria Trezise (Islip, N.Y.) to extend the lead to 3-0 with 15 minutes to play.

Blazers' senior goalkeeper Kelly Callahan (Monson, Mass.) tallied seven saves in 81 minutes of shutout play, while her counterpart, Trezise turned away five shots in the losing effort. Sophomore net-minder Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.) played the final nine minutes of the contest and helped preserve the victory.

Killion and Gorneault combined for five of the Blazers' eight shots on target, while LaRochelle, freshman forward Colleen Flaherty (Stoughton, Mass.), and sophomore midfielder Chelsea Carroll (Meriden, Conn.) added one shot on goal apiece.

Elms resumes to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action Saturday, Oct. 1 when it travels to Lesley University. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m.
