Field Hockey Defense Holds Strong After Home Loss to Johnson & Wales

CHICOPEE, MASS. - The Elms College Field Hockey team hosted Johnson & Wales University in a conference matchup on Homecoming Day on Saturday morning at Leary Field.

BASICS
Score: Elms College 0 | Johnson & Wales University 12
Records: Blazers 0-8, 0-4 (GNAC) | Wildcats 6-3, 3-0 (GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Johnson & Wales would come out of the gate with a shot within the first two minutes in the first period. The Wildcats would continue to create offensive pressure on the Blazers defense, but first year forward/defender Lily Sheridan (Ashby, Mass.) would have a big defensive save. First year goaltender Emily Hunt (Montrose, N.Y.) would have 6 huge saves before the Wildcats would get their second goal of the period. The Wildcats would continue to have shots on goals, but the Blazers were unsuccessful in having an offensive possession. Before the end of the first period Hunt would get three more saves. At the start of the second period, we would see a similar narrative as the Wildcats would score within the first minute of the period after Hunt 's big save. However, Hunt would have six huge saves to add to her career stats through the second period and Sheridan would have another defensive save. Unfortunately, the Blazers wouldn't get any offensive time in the first half and the Wildcats would lead 4-0.

The third quarter would begin with the Wildcats taking more shots and scoring early, but the Blazers defense would hold strong with a defensive save by sophomore forward Stacy Ochieng and a save by junior goaltender Katelyn Volk (Warwick, R.I.). Volk would have two more saves before the end of the third period. At the start of the fourth period, the Wildcats would score, but again the Blazers defense would put up a fight. With first year forward/defender Emily Kilili (Wareham, Mass.) and junior defender Elizabeth Franzoni (Rutland, Vt.) having two defensive saves to end the last period. Unfortunately, after the Blazers put up a strong defense, the Wildcats would take home the win, 12-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Hunt would have 16 saves out of 20 shots

  • Sheridan would have 2 defensive saves
