Women's Volleyball Woes Continue at Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Elms College Women's Volleyball team traveled to Mount Holyoke College for a non-conference match on Thursday evening.

Score: Elms College 1 (18, 24, 25, 20) | Mount Holyoke College 3 (25, 26, 13, 25)
Records: Blazers 8-17, 1-11 (GNAC) | Lyons 14-13, 4-6 (NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The opening set would start by Mount Holyoke scoring five-straight points, Elms would see a kill from junior Lilliana Simmons (Springfield, Mass.), but the Lyons would continue to add to their lead. As the set continued, the Blazers would see additional kills by seniors Angelica Marks (Miami, Fla.), Alysha Izquierdo (Holyoke, Mass.), graduate student Alyssa Moore (Ludlow, Mass.), Simmons, and junior Quiana Gibbs (Porterville, Calif.), along with two service aces from Q.Gibbs and Izquierdo. Unfortunately, MHC would win the first set 25-18.

The second set would begin with Elms earning a 7-1 lead, with the assistance of a service ace by senior Jaylen Holman (Las Cruces, N.M.), a kill from Izquierdo, and a block by Izquierdo and sophomore Olivia Rivera (Springfield, Mass.). The Blazers would continue to add kills from Q.Gibbs, Izquierdo, Moore and Marks, service aces by Marks and Izquierdo, but the Lyons would battle back to take the lead. As the set neared its end, Elms would see late kills from Marks, Simmons, and Izquierdo to extend the set, but Mount Holyoke would win the set 26-24 and would take a two set lead.

The third set would once again see the Blazers take an early 9-1 lead, with the help from a service ace by Holman, three kills from Izquierdo and a kill by Moore. The Lyons would then begin to rally back to narrow the lead, but Elms would continue control the set, with the assistance of kills by Izquierdo, Q.Gibbs, and Simmons, along with service aces from Marks and Holman and two blocks by Marks, Rivera, and Izquierdo to win the set 25-13, to bring the match to 2-1.

The fourth and final set would begin by the two nearby foes battling for the lead, with the Blazers recording a kill by Izquierdo,  but MHC would then take the lead. But shortly thereafter, Elms would create a rally to tie the set 15-15, with the assistance of Izquierdo  Marks both recording a pair of kills, along a service ace by Marks, followed by a pair of Q.Gibbs kills. Unfortunately, the Lyons would win the set 25-20 and would defeat the Blazers the match three sets to one.

  • Q.Gibbs - nine digs, seven kills, and a service ace.

  • T.Gibbs - two digs.

  • Haug - four digs.

  • Holman - 28 assists, 20 digs, and three service aces.

  • Izquierdo - 15 kills, 12 digs, two service aces, and two block assists.

  • Marks - six kills, three service aces, a block, and a dig.

  • Moore - 15 digs, four assists, and three kills.

  • Rivera - two block assists and an assist.

  • Simmons - 12 digs and five kills.

 

UP NEXT: The Elms Women's Volleyball team will conclude the 2025 season at home hosting Dean College for their annual Senior Day at Picknelly Arena for a conference match at 12 pm.
