Yowell Nets Game-Winner to Lift Women’s Soccer to 1-0 Overtime Victory Over Mitchell College

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Elms College freshman forward Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) netted her team-high 10th goal of the season in the 94th minute of play to break a scoreless tie and lift the Blazers to a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory over Mitchell College on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field in New London, Conn.

With the win, Elms improves to 5-8-1 on the season, 4-0-1 in NECC action and has now won three straight games. Mitchell moves to 3-7 overall, 3-3 in league play.

In the opening 45 minutes of play, Elms held a 6-1 shot advantage as juniors Victoria Cebula (Granby, Mass.), Ally Witaszek (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and freshman Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, N.Y.) each had scoring opportunities, but Mitchell's goalkeeper Kaylee Woodford (Niantic, Conn.) kept the Blazers at bay making three saves during the period to keep the score at 0-0 at halftime.

Following the break, the Mariners found an offensive groove as Mitchell posted a 7-4 edge in shots in the second frame but was denied any scoring chance as Rinaudo, who replaced Yowell between the pipes in the second half, made two saves, while Elms' defense added two blocked shots to keep the score tied at 0-0 at the end of regulation.

The Blazers wasted no time in the extra frame as freshman midfielder Lyndsey Oppenheimer (Easthampton, Mass.) sailed a shot that went just wide of the mark in the 94th minute of action. Two minutes later, Yowell won the ball from the Mariners' defense and delivered the game-winning goal – her fourth scoring strike in the last three games.

Yowell finished with two shots on goal for Elms in the win, while Alexandra Charles (Massapequa, N.Y.), Katie McBride (Paris, France), and Madeline Crow (Rockville, Md.) registered three shots on target each for Mitchell.

Elms returns to NECC action on Friday, Oct. 19 when it hosts Daniel Webster College at 4:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
