Womens Soccer Soars Past Newbury, 4-0
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Elms College junior
midfielder Erica
Griffo (Syracuse, N.Y.) netted a goal and added a pair
of assists to help pace the Blazers to a 4-0 victory over Newbury
College in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference
(NECC) opener for both teams at Pine Manor College.
With the win, Elms improves to 2-5 on the season, 1-0 in conference action, while Newbury falls to 1-4 overall, 0-1 in NECC play.
After 25 minutes of scoreless action, Elms' junior midfielder Amanda Alvarado (Springfield, Mass.) put the Blazers on the board when she capitalized on a rebounded shot for her first goal of the 2010 campaign.
Ten minutes later, Blazers' junior forward Jennifer Killion (Cambridge, Mass.) found the back of the net when she punched a pass from Griffo to the right side of the net from six yards out, giving Elms a 2-0 lead before intermission.
In the 69th minute of play, Griffo set up freshman
defender Allyson Witaszek (Feeding
Hills, Mass.) who scored her first collegiate goal on a
soft shot past the keeper from six yards out, upping the advantage
to 3-0.
Griffo then capped the scoring when she corralled a well-placed through ball from freshman midfielder Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.) and scorched downfield for a breakaway goal.
Elms' junior net minder Kelly Callahan (Monson, Mass.) earned the shutout victory, notching five saves, all of which occurred in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Blazers outshot Newbury 20-8 and held the Nighthawks to just one shot in the second half.
Elms returns to non-conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 28 when it hosts Framingham State University at 7:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
