Late Second Half Goal Lifts Westfield State Over Womens Soccer, 1-0
CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior goalkeeper
Kelly Callahan (Monson, Mass.) amassed 14 saves,
but Kayley Miller's (Ludlow, Mass.) goal in
the 79th minute propelled Westfield State University to
a 1-0 victory over the Blazers in Tuesday afternoon's
non-conference women's soccer game at Leary Field.
With the loss, Elms falls to 1-3 overall, while Westifeld State stakes its first win of the 2010 campaign to improve to 1-5 on the season.
Westfield State controlled the pace of the game from the outset, outshooting Elms 11-1 in the opening 45 minutes. In the second stanza, the Owls continued to pressure the Blazers, blasting 20 shots, nine of which were on target.
Westfield State finally scored the go-ahead goal when Leann Rivard's (Chicopee, Mass.) through ball found Miller who slipped her shot passed Callahan to give the Owls a 1-0 advantage at the 78:16 mark.
Elms managed two shots but could not net the equalizer.
Miller led Westfield State's offensive outburst, taking 11 shots (five on goal) while Ali Pease (Ludlow, Mass.) fired six shots.
Callahan faced 31 shots, 15 on net and collected eight of her 14 saves in the second period.
Elms returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 18 when it hosts Vassar College in a non-conference contest. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
