Ciampas Three Goals Lift WPI Past Mens Soccer, 3-0
CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior goalkeeper
Ryan
Sullivan (Agawam, Mass.) totaled 12 saves but a hat
trick from Worcester Polytechnic Institutes' (WPI) Chris
Ciampa (Danvers, Mass.) lifted the Engineers to a 3-0
victory over the Blazers in Wednesday afternoon's non-conference
men's soccer contest at Leary Field.
With the loss, Elms falls to 0-8-1 on the season, while WPI improves to 4-5 overall.
Eighteen minutes into the contest, WPI fired in a pair of quick goals as Ciampa delivered scoring strikes at the 17:16 mark and then again 43 seconds later at the 17:59 mark to give the Engineers a two-goal cushion.
Sullivan batted away eight shots in the first half to keep the score at 2-0 before Ciampa found the back of the net 11 minutes into the second frame to extend the lead to 3-0.
WPI's defense held the Blazers to just four shots on goal as Engineers' goalkeeper Jeff Wong (Long Hill, N.J.) recorded all three of his saves in the second half.
Ciampa finished with five of WPI's 15 shots on target, while Mike Ford (Whitman, Mass.) and Kevin Ducharme (Bedford, N.H.) each added three shots on goal. Ford and Ducharme also recorded an assist each in the winning effort for the Engineers.
Elms returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 2 in its New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) home opener. The Blazers will host Lesley University at 3:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
