Box Score

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Elms College senior midfielder Courtney Johnson (Belchertown, Mass.) delivered a scorching direct kick from 40 yards out, but two goals each from Westfield State University's Josh Severns (Suffield, Conn.) and David Anderson (Springfield, Mass.) helped lift the Owls to a 7-1 victory over the Blazers in Tuesday evening's non-conference men's soccer game.

With the loss, Elms falls to 0-5-1 on the season, while Westfield State improves to 5-2 overall.

Three first half goals put Westfield State on top early as Justin Laliberte (Easthampton, Mass.) connected with Tim Parsons (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) seven minutes into the game to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

Severns then notched the first of his two goals, sending a header into the back of the net at the 32:30 mark before then assisting on a score just one minute later, setting up teammate Nick Gale (Cheshire, Mass.) with Westfield's third goal of the frame.

Severns added his second strike of the day 25 seconds into the second half scoring on a pass from Phil Cimino (Newton, Mass.).

Anderson then capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity to put the Owls ahead 5-0 before Johnson blasted his goal to set the score at 5-1.

A breakaway goal by Anderson and a goal by Westfield State's Chris Monette (Wilbraham, Mass.) capped the scoring for the Owls.

Elms' junior net minder Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, Mass.) finished with seven saves in the losing effort.

Elms returns to action Saturday, Sept. 25 when it opens New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action at Newbury College. Game time is slated for 12:00 p.m.
