Mens Soccer Falls To Springfield, 3-0
CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior goalkeeper
Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, Mass.) collected six saves,
but a goal and assist from Springfield College's
Scott Morneault (Bristol, Conn.) lifted the Pride
to a 3-0 victory over the Blazers in Monday evening's
non-conference men's soccer game at Leary Field.
With the loss, Elms slides to 0-7-1 overall, while Springfield improves to 7-2 on the season.
Springfield connected for its first goal of the contest at the 16:12 mark when David Chessen (Edison, N.J.) tapped the ball to Morneault who then hit a streaking Eric Stalsburg (Old Saybrook, Conn.) who fired a shot into the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead.
After taking a 1-0 advantage into halftime, the Pride extended its lead to two when John Mankus (Tolland, Conn.) scored off a corner kick service from Danny Amato (Newington, Conn.) in the 51st minute of action.
Seven minutes later, Springfield netted its third goal of the game when Morneault scorched a shot that deflected off an Elms defender and into the net.
The Blazers had opportunities to get on the board, placing seven shots on target, but could not find the scoring touch.
Springfield net minder Chris Walton (Cromwell, Conn.) finished with six saves to preserve the shutout win.
Elms returns to non-conference action on Wednesday, Sept. 29 when it hosts Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
