Baseball Loses a Close Battle at Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. - The Elms College Baseball team traveled to Rivier University for a conference game on Wednesday afternoon.

BASICS
Score: Elms College 2 | Rivier University 5
Records: Blazers 9-17, 4-7 (GNAC) | Raiders 10-14, 5-5 (GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Blazers were held in check on offense through the first four innings, as Rivier did not let Elms score any runs, even with the help of base hits from senior catcher Blake Bastos (Mineola, N.Y.) and sophomore infielder Griffen Levesque (Agawam, Mass.). Fortunately for the Blazers, they received a boost from sophomore pitcher Ryan Ziegler (Uncasville, Conn.) who only allowed two runs and recorded seven strikeouts in his five innings of play to keep Elms right in the game. In the fifth inning, the Blazers broke through when senior outfielder Camron Watkins (East Haddam, Conn.) recorded a two-run single to score both graduate student infielder AJ Cook (Mendon, Mass) and senior outfielder George Chaya Jr. (Methuen, Mass), who got on base after hitting a double, to tie the game at 2-2. The Elms offense would continue their efforts of adding runners on base, with base hits from Levesque and sophomore infielder/pitcher Jayden Maynard (Manchester, Conn.), but those hits would not translate into runs. However, after Ziegler exited the game, the Blazers bullpen, including junior Colby Arnold (Waterford, Conn.) and senior Devin Kazarian (Westerly, R.I.), would toss a combined four strikeouts, but would be unable to provide any relief, allowing three unanswered runs which gave Elms a 5-2 loss.
