STOW, Mass. – The Elms College men's golf squad settled into second on the team leaderboard after the first day of action at the 2015 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship, hosted at Stow Acres Country Club, Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers sit 13 strokes off the lead after carding a team score of 326 after day one of the tournament. Senior Brian Benson (Agawam, Mass.) is second overall on the individual leaderboard after firing a 76 in the first 18 holes. Freshman Chris Soderberg (Northampton, Mass.) claimed a share of fifth overall, shooting an 80. Sophomores Brian Cowles (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Mike Fleury (West Springfield, Mass.) are tied at 13th, while senior Dan Olive (Jefferson Township, N.J.) is knotted at 15th with an 87.
Babson leads the tournament field with a score of 313. Following Babson and Elms, Becker and Daniel Webster are at third (351), Springfield College at fifth (354), Newbury in sixth (365), and Mitchell at seventh with a 390.
"The wind was a factor all day," said Elms College Head Coach Craig Cowles. "With only four players shooting in the 70s shows how tough of a day it was. Brian Benson had a great round, shooting a career low 76, and Chris Soderberg with a career best 80 gives us a great chance to close the gap. Brian Cowles, Mike Fleury, and Danny Olive have the talent to fire low rounds tomorrow."
The Blazers are back on the links for the final round of competition at Stow Acres Sunday morning. The first wave of players tee off at 10:30 a.m.
