Baseball Swept by Dean in Conference Doubleheader
FRANKLIN, Mass. - The Elms College Baseball team traveled to play Dean College for a conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Junior pitcher Ryan Ziegler (Uncasville, Conn.) would take the ball in for Elms in the opening game, but Dean would be the first to score, following a solo-home run in the top of the first inning. In the bottom half of the inning, first year catcher Eliam Martinez (Dominican Republic) would hit a single, but the Blazers would not be able to score in the inning. In the second inning, the Bulldogs offense would extend their lead by a run, but the Elms offense would quickly tie the game, following a lead-off double by sophomore outfielder/infielder Liam Pond (Holyoke, Mass.), walks to junior infielder Manny Essley (Duxbury, Mass.) and first year outfielder Anthony Osella (Manchester, Conn.), a sacrifice fly by first year infielder Colin Faber (Suffield, Conn.), and singles from junior infielder/pitcher Andrew Ciaglo (Hadley, Mass.) and senior outfielder/pitcher Nason Busca (Windsor, Conn.) to tie the game 2-2. In the third and fourth innings, both teams would be unable to score, but Ziegler would throw two swinging strikeouts, Pond would earn a walk, and Essley would hit a double. In the top of the fifth inning, Dean would retake the lead, but Ziegler would get out of the jam with a third swinging strikeout. In the bottom half of the inning, the Blazers would take their first year of the afternoon, after a two-run double by senior outfielder Noah Scanlon-Dean (Hadley, Mass.) would bring Pond and Essley across the plate, and Ciaglo would with a two-run single to score Scanlon-Dean and Faber, who would participate in a double steal, to bring the score to 6-3, Elms. In the top of the sixth inning, sophomore pitcher/outfielder Sal Ortiz (Springfield, Mass.) would relieve Ziegler, where he would record a swinging strikeout, but the Bulldogs would once again regain the lead by scoring five runs during the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Martinez would earn a walk, but the Elms offense would not score in the inning. In the seventh inning, senior pitcher Justin Saad (Waterford, Conn.) would relieve Ortiz, but the Dean offense would score four more runs to take the first game 12-6.
Game 2
Junior pitcher Luke Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) would start for the Blazers in the second game, where he would strikeout back-to-back batters to end the top of the first inning and Martinez would hit a single, but both teams would be held scoreless. In the second inning, Guyer would record two swinging strikeouts, but the Bulldogs would drive in six runs in the inning. In the top of the third inning, Guyer would toss two more strikeouts, but Dean would continue to add runs to their lead, scoring three runs in the inning. In the bottom half of the inning, the Elms offense would try to rally, when Ciaglo would git a single that would bring junior catcher Nicky Calvanese (Longmeadow, Mass.) across the plate, followed by Faber scoring when Martinez would reach base on an error committed by the first baseman, and Ciaglo would score a third run on a wild pitch. In the fourth inning, junior pitcher Scott Cooper (Middletown, R.I.) would relieve Guyer on the pitcher's mound, and he would record a swinging strikeout, followed by Faber hitting a sacrifice fly to left field that would bring first year outfielder Ryan Piccola (Oceanside, N.Y.) home for a fourth run. As the game would continue, Piccola would hit a single and the Elms offense would earn a few walks, but the Bulldogs would score ten more runs and would win the second game, 20-4.
