HOW IT HAPPENED

In the top of the first inning, the Elms offense would see first year outfielder Raynel Rodriguez (San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic) hit a double to right center field, followed by first year catcher Eliam Martinez (Dominican Republic) earning a walk and sophomore pitcher/infielder Brycen Diaz (Andrews, Texas) being hit by a pitch. Shortly thereafter, Rodriguez would be driven in by a single through the right side by junior infielder Manny Essley (Duxbury, Mass.) to give the Blazers an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first inning, senior pitcher Justin Saad (Waterford, Conn.) would start the game on the mound for Elms, striking one batter looking, but Springfield would tie the game in the inning. In the bottom of the second, the Elms' defense would catch a runner stealing second base, when junior catcher Nicky Calvanese (Longmeadow, Mass.) would throw the ball to second base with junior infielder/pitcher Andrew Ciaglo (Hadley, Mass.) making the tag, but the Pride would then take the lead after a two-run double to left field. In the top of the third inning, Martinez would hit a single through the left side, followed by a double to left center field from B.Diaz, which would then see Martinez score when senior outfielder Noah Scanlon-Dean (Hadley, Mass.) hit a single past second base. Scanlon-Dean would steal second base, but the Blazers would not be able to score more runs in the inning. In the bottom half of the third, junior pitcher/outfielder Sean Rosemond (Springfield, Mass.) would relieve Saad on the hill. Unfortunately, Springfield would add a run during the inning, Rosemond would end the inning with a swinging strikeout. In the top of the fourth inning, first year outfielder Anthony Osella (Manchester, Conn.) and Rodriguez would both hit singles to the outfield, but once again, the Elms offense would be unsuccessful in adding runs during the inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Pride would add two more runs during the inning, but Rosemond would end the inning with a looking strikeout. In the top of the fifth inning, B.Diaz would hit a lead-off single up the middle, followed by a walk to Essley. Then both baserunners would be driven in by Calvanese hitting a triple down the right field line. Then in the bottom half of the inning, Springfield would add two runs to the board after an error was committed by Rosemond. In the bottom of the sixth inning, first year pitcher Brady Petto (Dedham, Mass.) would come into the game to relieve Rosemond, but the Pride would add two runs and then sophomore catcher/pitcher Alex Baeta (Bellingham, Mass.) would take over the remainder of the inning for Petto. During the inning, Baeta would strike out one batter looking, but Springfield would add three more runs to extend their lead, 13-4. The seventh inning would see both teams be scoreless, with Scanlon-Dean earning a walk and stealing second base for a second time and Baeta would strikeout a second batter looking. In the top of the eighth inning, first year infielder Colin Faber (Suffield, Conn.) hit a lead-off single past the shortstop, followed by a double from Ciaglo to left center field. Faber would score shortly thereafter when Osella would knock a single up the middle, and Ciaglo would be driven in when Rodriguez would hit a single through the right side. Martinez would earn a walk, then B.Diaz would hit a sacrifice fly to left field, which would bring Osella across the plate. The Elms offense would continue to tally runs when Scanlon-Dean would hit a double to left field that would see Rodriguez and Martinez score. Then in the bottom of the eighth, senior infielder Chase Prestia (Newington, Conn.) would enter the game for Baeta, but the Pride would add a final run to defeat the Blazers 14-9.
