CHICOPEE, MA – Elms College sophomore
outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam, MA) combined
for 13 kills but the Blazers were swept by both Smith College
(25-8, 25-18, 25-16) and Colby-Sawyer (25-15, 25-10, 25-15) in
Saturday afternoon’s non-conference women’s volleyball
tri-match at Picknelly Arena.
Colby-Sawyer finished 2-0 on the day, highlighted by a thrilling
3-2 (24-26, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 22-20) come-from-behind win over
Smith in the second match of the day. With the two victories, the
Chargers move to 4-0 on the season, while Smith moves to 1-2
overall. Elms College falls to 2-4 following its two losses.
In the opening contest of the day, Smith came out firing, taking
the first set 25-8 on the strength of a .550 hitting percentage
(12K, 1E, 20TA) to race to a 1-0 lead over Elms.
In the second set, Croteau downed four of her nine kills for the
match and the Blazers found stride, hitting .280 as a unit, but the
Pioneers managed to terminate 12 balls to claim the second set
25-18 and stake a 2-0 lead in the contest.
Smith closed the Blazers out in the third set as Stephanie
Bleyendaal (Boston, MA) registered five kills to help
guide the Pioneers to a 25-16 third frame victory, securing the
sweep.
In Elms’ second match of the day, Colby-Sawyer received a
match-best 12-kill effort from Megan White (Monroe,
CT), while Mickey Lapan (Medway, MA)
paced the defense with 11 digs.
Genny Moore (Centerville, MA) paced the Charger
offense, handing out 25 assists.
The Blazers received four kills from Croteau and a tie for the
match lead in digs (11) from senior middle hitter Melissa
Clark (Chicopee, MA).
In Saturday’s second match between Smith and Colby-Sawyer,
the Pioneers battled to a 2-0 lead in the contest before the
Chargers rallied to win the following three stanzas behind a
21-kill outburst from Michelle Doody (Franklin,
MA) and a match-high 42 assists from Moore.
Stef Turner (Boxborough, MA) notched 13 kills in
the match, while four players recorded double-digit digs, including
Moore (13), Doody (18), White (14) and Lapan (28).
Smith received 19 kills from Bethany Weiss (Windham,
NH) and 12 from Shakwana Etienne (West Orange,
NJ). The tandem of Lauren Martinez (Phoenix,
AZ) and Courtney Faria (Pocasset, MA)
combined for 44 assists (27 and 17 respectively).
The Pioneers also received double-digit dig outputs from four
players, including Blair Bell (Upper Montclair,
NJ) (14), Laurel Belton (San Bernadino,
CA) (28), Brianne Connizzo (Demarest, NJ)
(29) and Rachel Lackert (Cold Spring Harbor,
NY).
Elms College returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 15 when it travels to
Westfield State for a 7:00 p.m. showdown.
