Women's Soccer Sinks Pilgrims 3-1 on the Road

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Elms College Women's Soccer team traveled to New England College for a conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first half would kick off with Elms taking an early offensive advantage, with the first goal of the game made by graduate student midfielder Hannah Kolodziey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) assisted by senior forward Kelly Malheiro (Centereach, N.Y.). The Blazers offense would see a shot from sophomore forward/midfielder Emily Basua (Oxnard, Cali.), but it would go wide of the goal. New England College would then four shots, the first being saved by graduate student goalkeeper Hailey Magierowski (Brimfield, Mass.), two shots would go off target, but the fourth shot would find the back of the net to even the score 1-1. In the next ten minutes, Elms would tally nine shots by; four by Basua, three by Malheiro, followed by shots from junior midfielder Daniella Niemiec (Chicopee, Mass.), junior forward Jamie McDonough (Dedham, Mass.), and sophomore defender Sydney Polica (Stratford, Conn.). The Blazers offense would continue to put pressure on the Pilgrims defense, taking an additional seven shots; four shots by Basua, and shots from McDonough, sophomore midfielder Lilli Ramos (Springfield, Mass.), and senior midfielder Hannah Duggan (Palmer, Mass.). Before the halftime horn blew, Elms graduate student forward Kellie Smith (Marshfield, Mass.) would score the second goal to give the Blazers a 2-1 lead.

The second half would begin with multiple shots from both teams, four shots by NEC and eight shots by Elms. Magierowski would make two saves during this time to keep the Blazers 2-1 lead. Both sides would continue their efforts to add to their side of the scoreboard, but neither would be successful until the 72nd minute when McDonough would connect with an open Malheiro to score the third goal of the game. The Pilgrims would try to cut down the Elms lead, taking four shots in three minutes, but the Blazers defense would hold strong until the final whistle where Elms would come out with the conference victory 3-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Kolodziey, Malheiro, and Smith would score each of the three goals of the game, Malheiro would also add an assist.

  • Basua would take 11 shots with five of those shots on goal.

  • McDonough would make seven shots, three on net, with an assist.

  • Magierowski would make six saves of the seven shots she faced.

  • The Blazers would out shoot the Pilgrims 38-11.
