Blazers Strike Down Sharks

Chicopee, MA - Elms College Blazers defeated the Simmons College Sharks earlier this afternoon, clutching a 6-1 record on the season for conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The first set stayed close as the Blazers and Sharks traded points until a service run by Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa (Boca Raton, FL) to put the Blazers up 17-15. Despite the Sharks late effort, the Blazers stayed on top and closed out the first set with a solo block by Sabrina Christie (Agawam, MA). Elms took the set 25-21 and went up 1-0 in the match. 
 
The second set remained close as the Blazers and Sharks traded service runs including 12 tied scores and 7 lead changes. The Blazers were behind 16-19 before a Kianna Lozada (Bayamon, PR) service run evened the score at 19-19. The set went into extra points as Christie tied the set 25-25 at the service line before a block by Alanys Cruz Diaz (Humacao, P.R.) and Elese Ciarcia (South Glastonbury, CT) ended the second set 27-25. Elms took a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
The third set saw the Blazers down early as a service run from the Sharks gave them a 7 point lead. The Blazers and Sharks proceeded with back-and-forth action. Despite a pair of late kills from Ramos Figueroa and Cruz Diaz, the early deficit was too large for the Blazers to overcome and they fell 18-25. Elms still led the match 2-1. 
 
The fourth set began with back-and-forth action until a Shark service run propelled them to a 17-8 lead. The Blazers would not close the gap despite a pair of late kills from Christie. The Blazers fell 15-25 and the match was tied 2-2. 
 
The fifth set remained close as the Blazers and Sharks traded points until a Ramos Figueroa service run put the Blazers up 7-6. A late service run from Laura Jensen (Torrance, CA) tied the set 12-12. A late kill from Cruz Diaz pushed the set into extra points. The Blazers closed out the set with a kill and service ace from Ramos Figueroa, taking the set 16-14. Elms won the match 3-2. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Cruz Diaz led the Blazers with 18 kills and 7 errors on 43 attempts, hitting .256 while adding 6 block assists, 2 aces, and 10 digs.
- Rosado led the offense with 40 assists and added 2 kills and 13 digs.
- Ramos Figueroa led the Blazers with 4 aces and added 11 digs and 9 kills. 
- The Blazers had a match-high 11.5 blocks.
