First Year Fridays: Women’s Volleyball

Chicopee, MA - With COVID-19 stalling our fall season, the Elms College Athletic Department will be showcasing our first year Blazers every Friday. Next up is our Women's Volleyball team. Follow along and get to know more about your fellow Blazers! The Women's Volleyball program brought in four new players in 2020, here is a little something about each STUDENT-athlete.

 

Meet: Olivia Hogans

Position: Outside Hitter

High School/Hometown: Amherst Regional High School/Amherst, MA 

Favorite High School related memory: Going to the varsity football games 

What brought you to Elms College?

"I was recruited for volleyball."

What made Elms stick out to you mnore than other college interests?

"Everything I heard about the Nursing program!"

What are your pregame rituals?

"Listen to music and stretch after drinking a Dunkin' redbull."

What's a quote you live by and why?

"You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them."

Who inspires you to be a driven STUDENT-athlete you are today?

"Myself."

 

Meet: Sam Bassell

Position: Setter

High School/Hometown: Wethersfield High School/Wethersfield, CT

Favorite High School related memory: My favorite high school memory was the motorcade. Due to not being able to have a real/ideal graduation, we did a motorcade through our town to celebrate us!

What brought you to Elms College?

"What brought me to Elms College was the fact that it's a small college that has everything I was looking for. It provided volleyball, a small community and all the majors I was interested in/looking into."

What made Elms stick out to you mnore than other college interests?

"It was a small college that was very welcoming from the start, everyone was easy to work with when it came to the college process."

What are your pregame rituals?

"Before games I warm up with stretching and music to get my mind focused."

What's a quote you live by and why?

"The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing." -Walt Disney

I talk a lot and sometimes by talking too much, I never get anything done. Most of the time I need to stop talking and do what needs to get done!"

Who inspires you to be a driven STUDENT-athlete you are today?

"My family inspires me. They have always pushed sports and education in my life, and I have only benefited from it."

 

Meet: Alyssa Moore

Position: Outside Hitter

High School/Hometown: Ludlow Senior High School/Ludlow, MA

Favorite High School related memory: My favorite high school memory is watching our boys soccer team win states my junior year and the bus ride home after!

What brought you to Elms College?

"The small community attracted me to Elms. I really enjoyed the close knit community."

What made Elms stick out to you mnore than other college interests?

"Elms had a very family-like aspect which I enjoyed."

 

What's a quote you live by and why?

"I attribute my success to this—I never have or took any excuse." -Florence Nightingale

There is no excuse for impediment of success. If you want to be successful, you can find a way to try

Who inspires you to be a driven STUDENT-athlete you are today?

"My parents both inspire me to work hard because they worked for everything they have."

 

Meet: Autumn Strange

Position: Libero

High School/Hometown: Minnechaug Regional High School/Wilbraham, MA

Favorite High School related memory: Winning Western Mass!

What brought you to Elms College?

"The volleyball coach was very welcoming and I have known her for a while and it was close to home."

What made Elms stick out to you mnore than other college interests?

"It was small."

What's a quote you live by and why?

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

Who inspires you to be a driven STUDENT-athlete you are today?

"My mom."
