Women's Swimming Fourth After Day One Of GNAC Championship

CHICOPEE, MA, Dec. 6, 2008 - Elms College freshman Ashley Arbo (Rocky Hill, CT) won the 50-yard backstroke and a total of eight swimmers advanced to the finals as the Blazers current stand fourth after the first day of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Swimming Championship at Simmons College.

Host Simmons leads with 94 points. St. Joseph's (ME) (61), St. Joseph (CT) (46), Elms College (22.5), Husson (17), Wheelock (15) and Norwich (8.5) round out the seven-team field.

Arbo earned her first collegiate conference individual title with a winning time of 31.66. She also teamed with freshman Katie Roberts (Torrington, CT), sophomore Theresa Pitassi (Naugatuck, CT) and senior Katelyn Wasgatt (Worcester, MA) to place fifth in the 200-yard medley relay (2:14.02).

Roberts, who also placed fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle, earned runner-up honors in the 50-yard breaststroke and qualified for the season-ending New England Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championship in a time of 36.45.

The Blazers compete in the final day of the two-day GNAC Championship on Sunday, December 7. Trials and finals are set for 9:00 a.m.
