St. Joseph College (Conn.) Downs Women’s Lacrosse, 12-7

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Elms College freshman goalkeeper Julie Hurley (Palmer, Mass.) made seven saves and junior attacker Emily Walsh (Hadley, Mass.) scored three goals, but a five-goal effort from St. Joseph College's (Conn.) Francesca Mastria (Higganum, Conn.) helped the Blue Jays post a 12-7 victory in Monday afternoon's non-conference women's lacrosse game in West Hartford, Conn.

With the loss, Elms falls to 3-10 on the season, while St. Joseph improves to 4-8 overall

St. Joseph mounted an early 3-0 lead when Diana Soucier (Avon, Conn.), Michelle Wright (Wallingford, Conn.) and Giovanna Piasecki (Hamden, Conn.) each scored their first goals of the game.

Elms' sophomore attacker Catherine Duquette (Naples, Maine) found the back of the net at the 18:06 mark to set the score at 3-1 before Elizabeth Stranger (South Windsor, Conn.) put St. Joseph back up by three (4-1) with her first strike of the afternoon.

Walsh and junior attacker Chelsey Grabowski (South Hadley, Mass.) then fired in back-to-back scores to pull the Blazers to within one at 4-3 with 10:05 to play in the opening period before Mastria netted her first two goals to reestablish a three-goal cushion at 6-3 with 1:24 to play in the first half.

Eighteen seconds later, Walsh hit nylon with her second goal of the game to cut the gap to 6-4 at halftime.

Soucier and Mastria scored the first two goals out of the break to set the score at 8-4 before Walsh's third tally of the game made the score 8-5 with 24:56 to play. St. Joseph's Kelly Pickett (Farmingdale, N.J.) and Mastria then traded goals with Grabowski and Blazers' senior attacker Melissa Meon (South Hadley, Mass.) to set the score at 10-7, before the Blue Jays pulled away with Mastria's fifth goal and Pickett's second to give St. Joseph the 12-7 victory.

Hurley suffered the loss and falls to 1-3 on the season, while Stacey Velaszquez (Norwalk, Conn.) earned the win for St. Joseph.

Elms returns to conference action on Saturday, April 23 when it travels to Bridgewater State University for a 1:00 p.m. game.
