MAHWAH, N.J. - The Ramapo College men's soccer team faced off with the Blazers of Elms College in the championship match of the 2015 President's Cup where Ramapo came out on top, 5-1 to improve to 2-0-1 on the year.
In the first half, Ramapo got on the board first when rookie Ryan Campbell ripped a shot past the Elms goaltender 16 minutes into the game. Twenty minutes later, Nick Brancato connected on a pass from Santiago Garzon to put Ramapo ahead, 2-0. Just before the end of the half sophomore Donald Whittle posted one for Elms to close the gap, 1-2 heading into halftime.
Ramapo out shot Elms 10-8 and Matthew Hernandez made two saves in goal for the Roadrunners. Elm's Nicolas Pennant made five saves for the Blazers.
In the second half, rookie Edward Franzoni posted his first collegiate goal off a pass from Garzon to put Ramapo up 3-1 with just over 37 minutes to play. Justin Olaya added insurance at 59:02 on an unassisted shot and Jorge Castro made it 5-1 off an assist from Lucas Tasci with 21:46 remaining. The score held until the final buzzer giving Ramapo the four goal victory and the championship trophy.
Hernandez made two more saves in the second half where Ramapo out shot Elms once again, 6-3. Pennant finished the game with seven total saves and Ramapo earned seven corners to the Blazers' four.
