For Men’s Golf, Continued Excellence is on Agenda for 2011
Named the 2010 NECC Coach of the Year, Coach Cowles returns First Team All-NECC selections junior Philip Rurak (Wilbraham, Mass.) and sophomore Kyle Simard (Thorndike, Mass.) and Second Team All-NECC member sophomore Henry Fall (Harpswell, Maine).
Rurak was named First Team All-NECC after finishing NECC Championship tournament play with a two-day score of 150 which was third best in the field. Rurak shot in the 70s in eight of his 11 rounds during the fall season, including a season-low 72 on two occasions.
Simard notched rounds of 76 and 77 during the NECC Championship to earn his all-conference honors and carded 15 of his 20 rounds of the 2010-11 season with scores in the 70s including a low of 72 against Emmanuel College.
Fall was named Second Team All-NECC after carding rounds of 76 and 77 at the two-day league championship at Leicester Country Club hosted by Becker College and finished tied for fourth overall with teammate Simard who earned First Team All-NECC honors.
Fall tied for individual medalist honors at the season-opening Skidmore Invitational while Rurak earned individual medalist honors at the second Blazers Invitational to highlight a tremendously successful season for the Blazers. During the spring portion of the season, Fall shot three rounds of 76 and finished third overall at the season-ending Blazers' Spring Invitational.
Rurak was impressive carding a team-best round of 75 at the Worcester State University Invitational and registered a score 78 at the Western New England University (WNEU) Invite, along with Simard to lead the Blazers to a fifth place finish out of 12 teams.
Elms' deep and talented squad includes junior returners Daniel Costello (Brookfield, Conn.), David Pianki (West Suffield, Conn.), and Kyle Panek (Belchertown, Mass.) and sophomores Tyler Cudnik (Hampden, Mass.) and Edward Innarelli (Ludlow, Mass.). Two freshmen, Nicholas Smith (Enfield, Conn.) and Daniel Teague (Clinton, Conn.), round out the Blazers' lineup.
Cudnik competed in 16 rounds during the 2010 season and averaged an 84.6, notching a pair of 79s in the process. Pianki participated in five rounds last season and averaged an 85. Innarelli shot a season-best 81 on two occasions last season and finished his seven rounds with an average score 89.4.
Schedule
Elms will compete in a total of nine invitationals during the fall portion of the 2011-12 season and will host its Blazers Invitational at Westover Golf Course on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 10:00 a.m.
In October, the Blazers will look to retain a pair of titles as they will compete in the ECAC Championship on Oct. 1-2 traveling to the NECC Championship on Oct. 8-9.
