Box score

WEST HARTFORD, CT, Oct. 16, 2008 - St. Joseph freshman midfielder Christina Dias (Prospect, CT) headed in the game-winner in the 49th minute of play to help the Blue Jays to their school-record 11th win of the year with a 3-0 victory over Elms College in Thursday afternoon's non-conference women's soccer game at the St. Joseph Athletic Complex.

The Blue Jays (11-3-2) earned 10 wins in 2000, 2005 and 2006 (all under current head coach Chris LeGates) before winning their 11th of the season this afternoon.

The Blue Jays also set a school-record with 11 shutouts on the year as freshman goalkeeper Holly Mirabella (Seymour, CT) held the Blazers (7-7) scoreless while turning away four shots in her first start of the year.

The Blazers' best shot came early in the contest when junior forward Krystyna Gagne (Methuen, MA) was turned away from 10 yards out. Elms College narrowly missed another chance to take the lead later in the half when junior midfielder Maggie Rivers (Dalton, MA) struck the crossbar on a blast from 35 yards out.

With the game still scoreless in the 49th minute, SJC junior defender Susie McKenna (Southbury, CT) struck the ball into the box where a crossing Dias headed the ball past Elms College freshman goalkeeper Kelly Callahan (Monson, MA) for the opening goal of the contest.

Less than a minute later, the Blue Jays made it a 2-0 contest as sophomore forward Eva Peart (Bloomfield, CT) gathered the ball out of scrum and deposited a shot past Callahan from the goal-line.

St. Joseph then put the game out of reach in the 67th minute when junior midfielder Amanda Coutu (Lebanon, CT) gathered a rebound off her own shot and found the back of the net to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 advantage.

Mirabelli finished the contest with four saves as she went untested in the second stanza, while Callahan stopped six shots in defeat.

The Blazers will next play at Mitchell College in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) game on Wednesday, October 22.
