SPRINGFIELD, MA, Sept. 1, 2007 - Elms College junior goalkeeper Shannon Donnelly (Florence, MA) stopped five shots, but WNEC junior forward Emily VanLare's (Farmington, CT) first half goal lifted the Golden Bears to a 1-0 win over the Blazers in Saturday evening's first round of the Springfield Invitational women's soccer tournament at Irv Schmidt Field.

Elms College (0-1), which faced WNEC (1-0) for the first time since 1997, was outshot 13-3 in the loss.

Van Lare netted her first goal of the year in the 17th minute for the Golden Bears, who recorded 10 of their shots in the opening 45 minutes.

The Blazers face host Springfield College in the second day of the Springfield Invitational on Sunday, September 2 at Irv Schmidt Field. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
