CHESTNUT HILL, MA, Oct. 26, 2008 - Elms College senior Jill Bigos (South Hadley, MA) posted a runner-up finish to help the Blazers finish third overall in the first-ever New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Women's Cross Country Championship on Sunday afternoon at Franklin Park.

Bigos, who was named First Team All-NECC, outkicked Lesley junior Heather Peng and sophomore Jasmine Cuevas over the final 100 yards of the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) race to finish second out of 49 runners in a time of 21:31.

Lesley easily outdistanced the field, as the Lynx had four of the top six finishers, including freshman Charlotte Goff's winning time of 20:47.

Newbury (78), Elms College (100), Southern Vermont (107), Mitchell (116), Wheelock (127) and Bay Path (128) rounded out the seven-team field.

In the men's 8,000-meter championship, sophomore Nick Whitman (Florence, MA) earned Elms College's top individual finish in a time of 34:34.

Daniel Webster had four of the first nine finishers en route to claiming team championship honors with 39 points. Mitchell (59), Lesley (80), Southern Vermont (84), Newbury (88) and Elms College (139) rounded out the six-team field.

Elms College's men and women's cross country teams conclude the 2008 season in the NCAA Division III New England Qualifier on Saturday, November 8.
