Women's Volleyball Splits Season-Opening Tri-Match
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SPLITS SEASON-OPENING TRI-MATCH
CHICOPEE, MA, Sept. 9, 2006 - Elms College freshman outside hitter Samantha Sitek (Belchertown, MA) knocked down a team-high eight kills and sophomore middle hitter Sashiann Johnson (Belchertown, MA) added a match-high 11 aces to lead the Blazers to a split of Saturday's non-conference women's volleyball tri-match at the Maguire Center with a thrilling 3-2 (30-24, 30-16, 26-30, 19-30, 15-7) win over Anna Maria College.
Elms College, which fell to Southern Vermont College 3-1 (30-24, 25-30, 28-30, 15-30) in its season opener earlier in the day, appeared well on its way to an easy victory over Anna Maria after winning the first two games.
The Amcats, however, valiantly battled back to hold off the Blazers 30-26 in game three before posting a 30-19 win in game four to force a deciding fifth game.
In that tiebreaker, it was all Elms College, as the Blazers trailed just once on the game's opening point. From there, Elms College responded by scoring 12 of the next 17 points.
Freshman opposite Amanda Konsewicz (Westfield,
MA) sealed the victory with her eighth ace
of the match.
Johnson served up 17 aces in the two matches, Sitek knocked down a combined 13 kills, and Konsewicz added 13 kills and 12 aces in the two matches.
In it's victory over Elms College, Southern Vermont received a match-high 12 kills from junior middle hitter Tina Cook (Manchester Center, VT) and junior setter Danielle Tischer (Salem, CT) added a match-high 19 assists.
For Anna Maria in its loss to the Blazers, junior defensive specialist Jacqueline Laham (Westwood, MA) had 12 kills and 13 digs.
Southern Vermont (2-5) completed its sweep with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-15, 30-23) win over Anna Maria (0-3).
Elms College returns to non-conference play when it hosts Simmons College on Thursday, September 14. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
