CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) clocked a new school record in the 400-meter freestyle and was one of three Blazers' swimmers to notch three individual victories to help seal a 138-119 victory over Western New England University in Wednesday evening's women's swimming dual meet at Partyka Natatorium.
With the win, Elms improves to 6-4 on the season, while Western New England falls to 1-6 overall.
DeGrazia bested her previous mark in the 400-meter freestyle by notching a 4:54.26 in Wednesday's meet. She also added a win in the 50-meter backstroke (33.96) and the 200-meter backstroke (2:37.32).
Junior Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.) powered to a trio of victories including the 200-meter freestyle (2:21.80), the 50-meter freestyle (29.96) and the 100-meter freestyle (1:06.30); while classmate Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) touched the wall first in three races including the 100-meter individual medley (1:13.88), the 50-meter backstroke (37.24) and the 200-meter breaststroke (2:58.38).
Elms' sophomore Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) secured top honors in the 50-meter butterfly (32.80) and registered a time of 1:14.20 to finish second in the 100-meter individual medley just behind Dudunake.
Nichole Birchenough (Lowville, N.Y.) and Courtney Fitzpatrick (Stratford, Conn.) each won an individual event for Western New England as Birchenough placed first in the 100-meter butterfly (1:15.44) while Fitzpatrick clocked a winning time of 2:44.30 in the 200-meter individual medley.
The Golden Bears also won both relays as the team of Danielle Caron (Marlborough, Mass.), Fitzpatrick, Birchenough and Carissa Ancona (Hope Valley, R.I.) notched a top time of 2:20.85 in the 200-meter medley relay.
The squad of Ancona, Caron, Birchenough and Elise Carrington (Middlebury, Conn.) powered to a time first-place time of 2:08.70 in the 200-meter freestyle relay.
Elms returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Norwich University. Meet time is set for 1:00 p.m.
