WOMEN'S SWIMMING FALLS TO SMITH, 150-111
CHICOPEE, MA, Nov. 14, 2006 - Elms College freshman Marie Waterhouse (East Longmeadow, MA) set three individual school records and also swam a leg of the school-record setting 200-meter freestyle relay, but Smith College posted a 150-111 win over the Blazers in Tuesday night's women's swimming meet at Partyka Natatorium.
With the loss, Elms College fell to 2-3. Smith College, meanwhile, improved to 1-1-1.
Waterhouse posted school-record setting victories in both the
100-meter (1:13.20) and 200-meter (2:38.43) backstroke events. She
also set a new school-record in the 200-individual medley
(2:40.65), and later teamed with junior Kaity Jo Bryll
(East Hartland, CT), sophomore Kate Orefice
(Southington, CT) and freshman Melissa Pava
(Springfield, MA) to set a new school mark in the
200-meter freestyle relay (2:06.02).
The Pioneers, who were coming off a 131-131 tie with Eastern Connecticut State University, received a three first place finishes from junior Marly Pineda (Bosque Farms, NH) in the 200-meter individual medley (2:37.97), 200-meter breaststroke (3:03.97) and 200-meter freestyle (2:18.68).
Orefice set a school-record en route to a second place finish in the 200-meter breaststroke (3:07.10). She posted victories in both the 50-meter butterfly (33.22) and the 100-meter breaststroke (1:25.13).
Elms College's men and women's swimming teams return to action on Saturday, November 18 at Colby-Sawyer College. Meet time is 1:00 p.m.
