CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College women's soccer team registered their third shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over visiting Becker College in a New England Collegiate Conference contest at Leary Field Saturday afternoon.
The conference foes battled back-and-forth in a scoreless first half, with solid midfield play from both squads limited the scoring opportunities.
In the 61st minute of play, the Blazers broke through as junior defender Michelle Rossignol (Manchester, Conn.) launched a ball up the sideline to a sprinting sophomore defender Kylen O'Hearn (Somers, Conn.), who dribbled the near post and ripped an angled shot to the back corner of the goal, delivering the would-be game-winning goal for Elms.
"It was a ver hard fough conference match," said Elms Head Coach Sean Milbier. "Becker surprised us a little bit. They moved the ball better than we thought, and they played very physical. In the first half, we were not playing at our best, but in the second half we played a lot better. We possessed the ball, moved the ball, matched their physicality, and did a lot of really good thing. I was great to get the first goal, because I've been saying all year, that when we get that first goal we won't lose. To get the clean sheet is also good, but a conference win at home is big for us. We've deserved better in some of our early results, but today we got the result, and it feels good. We have a big conference match on the road Monday, then a non-conference match Wednesday, then it's all conference the rest of the way. I think today will go a long way for our confidence."
The Blazers edged the Hawks in the shot column, 17-10, in the match. Elms junior goalkeeper Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, N.Y.) made six saves in the win, while Becker senior goalie Kaitlyn Rose stopped a game-high eight shots.
Elms improves to 3-8 on the season, and 2-1 in the NECC, while Becker falls to 5-6-1, and 1-1-1 in the NECC standings. The Blazers will look to continue their winning ways in a conference tilt at Mitchell College Monday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
