WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO VASSAR IN OVERTIME, 2-1

Box score

CHICOPEE, MA, Sept. 6, 2008 - Elms College junior forward Krystyna Gagne (Methuen, MA) netted her first goal of the year, but Vassar College senior forward Emma Kemp (Albany, CA) scored the game-winning goal 4:57 into the first overtime to lift the visiting Brewers to a 2-1 win over the Blazers in Saturday's non-conference women's soccer season opener for both teams at Leary Field.

With the game tied 1-1 in overtime, Elms College freshman goalkeeper Kelly Callahan (Monson, MA) made a beautiful diving stop on a shot by sophomore midfielder Carolyn Demougeot (Potomac, MD), but Kemp swooped in and deposited the rebound past Callahan for the game-winner.

Gagne had given the Blazers (0-1) a quick 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when she broke past a Vassar defender and blasted a shot inside the far post past Vassar senior netminder Anne Hutchinson (St. Pete Beach, FL).

Demougeot knotted the game at 1-1 just 3:55 later when her shot deflected past Callahan and into the net.

The Brewers had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 83rd minute, but senior forward Nola Solomon's (Washington, DC) shot from 25 yards out deflected off the crossbar.

Although Vassar (1-0) held decisive advantages in both shots (26-4) and corner kicks (11-3), Callahan helped send the game into overtime, and finished with 13 saves.

Hutchinson was called upon to make just two stops to earn the victory.

Elms College returns to non-conference action with a game at WPI on Tuesday, September 9. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
