WOMEN'S SOCCER OUTLASTED AT WPI, 2-0

Box score

WORCESTER, MA, Sept. 9, 2008 - Elms College freshman goalkeeper Kelly Callahan (Monson, MA) turned away four shots, but WPI sophomore forward Kristen Garza (Kingston, MA) tallied a pair of second half goals to help propel the host Engineers to a 2-0 shutout over the Blazers in non-conference women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon.

With the result, WPI upped its record to 3-2, while Elms College fell to 0-2.

After a scoreless first half, WPI scored midway through the second stanza when freshman midfielder Victoria Howland (Red Hook, NY) fed Garza on a through-pass in the 63rd minute. Garza added an insurance marker when she buried a pass from junior defender Hillary Rotatari (Auburn, MA) in the 82nd minute.

Garza, who set the school single-season scoring mark with 15 goals a year ago, now has 18 career tallies in 23 games.

WPI sophomore netminder Abaigeal Caras (Essex, CT) was called on to make two saves en route to registering her second shutout of the season.  Among Callahan's saves included an eye-popping stop on a Jocelyn Moody (Bainbridge Island, WA) rocket from point blank range in the 50th minute.

On the day, the Engineers enjoyed a 17-3 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.

Elms College is back in action on Thursday, September 11 with a 4:00 p.m. home match against MCLA.
