CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) and sophomore attacker Lauren Mazza (Agawam, Mass.) each scored a goal, but Fitchburg State University's Markie Apple (Pittsfield, Mass.) netted four goals and assisted on two others to help pace the Falcons to a 16-2 victory in Thursday evening's non-conference women's lacrosse game at Leary Field.
With the loss, Elms moves to 1-5 on the season, while Fitchburg State improves to 1-2 overall.
Fitchburg State netted 11 first half goals to help stake its win including three from Apple and two each from Jessica Bartlett (Marlborough, Mass.) and Lindsey White (Hanover, Mass.).
In the second stanza, White and Kristin Dooley (Salem, Mass.) fired in back-to-back goals before Mazza struck with Elms' first tally with 24:33 to play in the game. Apple then added her fourth marker of the contest and Erin Murphy (Warwick, R.I.) found the back of the net to give the Falcons a 15-1 lead.
Lyons then scored on a free position shot for the Blazers' second goal of the game at the 18:54 mark and Fitchburg State's Jessica Sullivan (Milton, Mass.) scored the final goal of the game with just over a minute left.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alysha Parsons (Newington, Conn.) made five saves in goal for Elms and senior Catherine Leonard (Chicopee, Mass.) added two stops. Lyons finished with seven groundballs and five caused turnovers.
Elizabeth Darrigo (Billerica, Mass.) earned the win between the pipes with seven saves and Dylana Drolette (Burlington, Vt.) added 10 saves in the second half for the Falcons, while Kayla Bridges (Foxboro, Mass.) secured six groundballs.
Elms is back in action on Tuesday, April 2 when it hosts Anna Maria College at 4:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
