Established in 1981, the women's basketball program is Elms
College's oldest NCAA-sponsored athletic team. It has recorded more
than 200 victories during its 30-year history, won the 1992-1993
Massachusetts Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women
(MAIAW) Championship, the 2000-2001 North Atlantic Conference (NAC)
Championship, and has had six players eclipse the 1,000-point
milestone.
In 2009-10, the Blazers garnered the fourth seed in the 2009-10
New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship tournament,
and produced wins in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the
tournament to earn a berth in the title game. In the process, Elms
posted a four-point win over the tournament's top seed in the
semifinals to advance to the championship game.
Sophomore point guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham,
Mass.), a Second-Team All-NECC selection, was the catalyst
for the Blazers' offense this season, leading the team in both
points scored (312) and assists with 123. Talmadge's keen passing
vaulted her into the top slot on the program's all-time assists
list, as she has now dished out 244 during her two-year career at
Elms. Her 123 helpers is also a single-season program record,
besting the total of 121 she set as a freshman in
2008-09.
The Blazers received stellar play from freshman guard Jen
Normandie (Westford, Mass.) who netted a second-best 238
points in her debut season. She was also a force on the glass,
hauling in 143 rebounds in 26 games played.
Senior guard Annie Dunnack (Mansfield Center,
Conn.) was the squad's sharpshooter during the 2009-10
campaign as the three-year player amassed a 41.9 field goal
percentage, and connected on 34.6-percent of her shots from
three-point range.
After missing a majority of the season due to injury, senior
forward Amanda Brogna (Oxford, Mass.) was an
impact player in the 13 contests she played in, pouring in 143
points and grabbing 94 boards. Brogna concludes her career as the
program's all-time leader in blocked shots (71) and her mark of 24
swats in 2008-09 still stands as the school's single-season record.
She also ranks eighth on the Blazers' all-time points list (864)
and is second on Elms' career field goal percentage list
(47.8-percent).
In addition to competing in the NECC, the Blazers are also members of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
