Moulton's Buzzer-Beater Lifts Elms Over Newbury

Chicopee, Mass.- The Elms College women's basketball team won a wild game on Saturday against conference opponent Newbury College by the score of 67-66. It was a nice bounce back win for the Blazers, defeating the top team in the conference, after coming off a tough road loss earlier in the week.

The finish was one for the ages. Elms lead 65-62 until Newbury's Tatianna Occena nailed a three-pointer and got fouled with 4.7 seconds on the clock. Occena would hit the free-throw to give the Nighthawks the one-point lead.

The Blazers then inbounded the ball to point guard Molly Moulton who took it in to the paint and hit the game-winner to give Elms the lead with 0.6 seconds left. Newbury did not get a shot off on their ensuing possesion, as the Blazers came away with the victory.

Senior Mackenzie LaRochelle led the way for the Blazers with 19 points and six rebounds. Niah Pantry recorded her seventh straight double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out with two minutes left. Molly Moulton finished with 13 points, none more important than her layup to give Elms the win. The Blazers displayed great defense in the paint, as they finished with seven blocks on the game.

Nighthawks forward Savannah Olsen tallied a team high 27 points in the loss. She also grabbed nine rebounds. Forward Jaymesha Sanders was unstoppable on the glass. She pulled down 21 boards, 11 of them offensive. Sanders finished with a double-double, as she had 11 points to go along with her 21 rebounds. Newbury, once down by 10 in the second half, fought their way back into the game, but their comeback attempt fell just short at the buzzer.

The win put the Blazers (7-11) over .500 in the conference, at 6-5. It was only Newbury's (14-8) second conference loss on the season as they fall to 11-2 in the New England Collegiate Conference and 14-8 overall. Elms returns to action Monday in a non-conference home game against the Coast Guard Academy.
