Softball Concludes Spring Break Trip on Wednesday

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Elms College softball team capped its spring break trip to Fort Myers with a pair of losses; 2-0 to Richard Stockton College and 8-0 to Saint Lawrence University to complete Gene Cusic Classic action on Wednesday.

With the two losses, Elms finishes its spring break trip 1-7 overall.

In the opener against Richard Stockton, the Ospreys plated a run in the top of the third and another in the top of the fifth and limited Elms to just two hits for the entire game to seal a 2-0 victory.

Blazers' senior pitcher Courtney Hampton (Westfield, Mass.) went all seven innings and fanned four batters and added one of the team's two hits.

Sophomore designated player Sarah Buckley (Wilbraham, Mass.) recorded Elms' other hit – both singles.

In the top of the fourth inning, Grace Long (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) put Richard Stockton ahead with a two-out home run to center field and then came around to score in the sixth inning when she doubled and then scampered home on an Elms error to give the Ospreys a 2-0 lead.

Jamie Gasko (Cinnaminson, N.J.) twirled the complete-game shutout and fanned seven batters to improve to 2-0 on the season, while the loss dropped Hampton to 1-3 overall.

Against St. Lawrence, sophomore third baseman Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.) and freshman pitcher Alyson Santerre (Thompson, Conn.) recorded Elms' only two hits of the game.

The Saints strung together 17 hits and scored eight runs including two tallies in the third fourth and fifth innings to claim a 8-0 victory.

Aisha O'Connor (Pembroke, Ontario) led the charge with three hits, while Rebecca Allen (Victor, N.Y.) drove in three runs.

Santerre tossed the first three innings and suffered the loss before being replaced by Hampton who pitched four innings and struck out three batters.

St. Lawrence received a complete-game effort from Elizabeth McGinley (Canastota, N.Y.) who allowed just two hits and dealt seven strikeouts to seal the win.

Elms returns home to host Johnson State College on Sunday, March 18 with doubleheader action set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Cheryl R. Condon Field.
